Ask G: Decorative CFL bulbs for chandeliers

The trouble with 'pig's tails'...

I would love to know what I am supposed to do about lighting for chandeliers. They look awful with CFL bulbs - like they have little pig's tails hanging out of them! Is there a pretty green alternative?

Philips, Osram and others have developed 'candle'-shaped CFLs specifically for decorative light fittings.

Supermarkets have a necessarily limited range of light bulbs (they're selling a lot of other stuff), so you'll probably have to go to a specialist lighting store.

But alternatives to the pig's tails (we love your choice of words!) are certainly available.
