Ask G: Why are downlights power hungry?

Say watt?

I was told that it's the wattage that's important when choosing lighting. My downlights are 50-watt bulbs, which is less than an old-fashioned 60-watt bulb. Why are people saying they're power hungry?

Lots of blue downlights

You need to use downlights in multiples.

A single downlight doesn't provide much light.

Current lighting trends use downlights to provide general room lighting, requiring at least four for a small room, more for larger rooms.

I've seen living rooms with 20 or more downlights! That's 1,000 watts plus to light a single room!

They're power hungry because they're used in multiples.
