Ask G: Inverter technology in air conditioners

Fancy advertising lingo or something more?

I saw a TV ad for air conditioners where they were going on about something called "inverter technology". What is it? Is it worth looking for or is it just advertising jargon?

Fast or slow? Air conditioners with inverter technology allow you to control the cooler's speed.

Inverter technology enables the air conditioner to operate at varying speeds, depending on how cool you want it to be.

This can reduce electricity consumption.

But before buying an air conditioner, first explore your home's potential to prevent heat gain by using adequate shading and insulation.

Look for an air conditioner with inverter technology, only if you really need one.
