It is not as simple as just wanting to go vegetarian. I only have meat once a week, and have difficulty keeping my iron levels up though I eat plenty of other iron-rich foods combined with Vit C. Because of their high salt content I am wary of the many packaged vegetarian products available, so I prepare all my meals from scratch, and separately from my two vegetarian children who consume far more salt than I can cope with.
I do eat meat- but limit this to 2-3 times a week. I am trying to strike a balance between nutritional needs, a diet that suits my blood type and the impacts of my eating habits on the environment. I tried being vegetarian but it just did not suit my body! I try to make informed choices about what seafood to eat- especially in relation to overfished species such as tuna. I have to be honest- it can be hard though to make sure your everyday choices and behaviour align with your principles. With our busy lifestyles these days its much easier to pop in to a local supermarket, than to source local fruit and vegies by investing the time to go to farmers markets. Do we acutally need a lifestyle change? Does food need to incoporate the price of its effect on the environment?
