The average Australian throws out 145 kg of food every year, which works out to nearly 20% of all the food we buy in total. I'd like to think I'm different, but really, I know I'm guilty.
The half-loaf of bread that goes stale before I get to use it all, the fresh vegies I buy to make wonderful home-cooked meals with, but end up going limp because I changed my mind and got takeaway instead. It all adds up a bit at a time, and it's really a shame.
Most of our food waste ends up turning yuck in landfill. I've done a bit better lately because I've got a compost bin now - instead of creating methane which becomes a powerful greenhouse gas, I'm making useful material I can use in the garden.
But it'd be better not to waste the food I buy in the first place. As well as the food going to waste, think of all the energy and time it took to make it and truck it around Australia. We can really do better in this regard - check out the fantastic Love Food, Hate Waste website for some ideas.
How about you? Do you have anything lurking in the back of the cupboard that you should use up before it goes to waste? If you're not sure what to do with it, leave a comment and we'll see if we can figure something out!

Ooh, borlotti beans can make a nice salad for lunch. Drain them and give them a little rinse, then mix them up with a tin of tuna or a bit of shredded ham, a big handful of rocket, and maybe some capsicum if you like. A lemony dressing (just lemon and a bit of olive oil) goes really well, plus a little salt and/or pepper. A crusty bread roll is nice with this too.
I have a can of Borlotti beans that I've always wondered what to do with. Any suggestions?
OK - how about semolina? Can't recall why I bought it and what I intended to make with it.
thanks
Hehe, sounds like the kind of thing I would buy then forget about! I always like those citrus-y semolina cakes - I know you can put it in pasta style dishes too, but cake seems like more fun. There's a few recipes here.
