According to the ABS, the average family food basket in Australia cost $281 in 2007.

But 20% of that food could well end up in the bin, as we throw out old bananas, leftovers we never got around to eating, all sorts of food that we bought, but didn't use.

That's about $50 each week that's been thrown in the bin. If you add that up over a year, you may end up wasting $2,600 on something that you didn't even use.

That money would go a long way towards buying a solar hot water heater, or insulating your house, or some of the more expensive green changes you can make that pay off in the long run.

It's definitely worth working out what you're buying, and making sure you don't throw your money in the bin along with the food you don't eat.
