Farm Gate Tour in Port Macquarie

Visit Port Macquarie on this winter long weekend and take part in the brand new Farm Gate Tour. Port Macquarie’s food bowl is thriving with a diversity of farms and organic growers of beef, pork, eggs, dairy, native bush-foods, macadamias and oysters. With over 10 farms open for touring, you may self-drive around and hear from farmers and specialists on free range, regeneration, biodiversity, water quality and all things relating to growing food. Kids will have the opportunity to run among free-range hens and meet other baby animals.

Be food wise on the World Environment Day

Celebrated every year on 5 June, the theme of this year’s global awareness day is ‘think, eat, save’, which highlights anti-food waste and food loss; an important issue considering that 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every year, while one in seven people in the world go hungry. Jon Dee urges us to be food wise and rethink our consumption behaviour as $8 billion worth of foods are thrown out from Aussie households and 4 million tonnes go into landfill. Soil health is the one of the most important issues in farming. Australia has some of the oldest and most fragile soils on the planet and thus the topic of soil health cannot be ignored. The National Landcare Facilitator in partnership with Soils for Life presents three webinars on ‘Regenerating Australia’s Soil Health’. The series of webinars have been developed with farmers and others with an interest in land management in mind. They aim to help drive a national conversation around soil health, share information and ideas from leading figures such as former Governor General and Advocate for Soil Health, Michael Jeffery, leading scientists and importantly farmers from across the country who are implementing changes on their farms.

March against Monsanto

No Monsanto

If you are concerned about the potential negative effects of genetically modified food on our bodies and the environment, then hop along to your nearest city centre on 25 May and march against Monsanto, the poster-corporation of GM food. The march is part of a worldwide protest against the possible harmful effects of the industry, including ecological contamination, decreased biodiversity and human health risks - not to mention big business creating monopolies and capitalising on our food production. Protests are to be held in the major city centres of most Australian states, corresponding with similar movements globally.
