Buy Nothing New Month 2012

Buy Nothing New Month

The month of October

Buy Nothing New Month is a community driven event held each year to combat modern consumerism movements. It is a month long event that challenges society's way of thinking that we 'need' lots of material possessions to be happy, as well as raising awareness of the waste this lifestyle creates.

To take part, you simply pledge to buy nothing new for the month of October.

This event is good for your wallet, and good for your conscience as you acknowledge the impact your actions have on the planet and work to lessen them. Being a part of Buy Nothing New Month can also be fun; organise a clothes-swapping day with your friends or explore your local vintage stores and op shops for recycled goods.

This month is not about going without essentials. It is about thinking deeply about what we truly need in life and reducing the impact on finite resources.

The week will feature locally staged activities designed to increase awareness of the benefits organic produce poses. The growth of interest in the organic movement in Australia in recent years has been primarily because of the health benefits that can be gained by going organic, and so this event is the perfect opportunity for you and your family to either trial going organic for the week, or, if you are already doing so, to spread the word to others.

WSPA World Animal Week 2012

WSPA helps animals

4 - 10 October, 2012

Celebrate animals and work to prevent cruelty by taking part in the World Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' World Animal Week. This worldwide initiative encourages people to raise awareness and funds for saving animals from cruelty, including orangutans that are killed or orphaned during palm oil farming, bears that have their claws removed and are then attacked by dogs in the sport of bear baiting, and many others.

During this year's World Animal Week, join the fight and sign up to become a part of the WSPA's Animal Hero Team. You can then raise funds to go towards saving animals from inhuman deaths or torture by holding a movie night for your friends with a gold coin donation, having an animal themed party or asking people to sponsor you to grow an animal-like beard.

World Record Rug Attempt

Cambodian mothers

26 October, 2012

Fair@Square, Australia's largest fair-trade and ethical festival, will attempt to break a world record this October as they line the banks of the Yarra River with multi-coloured, hand woven, recycled rugs.

However this attempt to break the longest line of such rugs has a bigger purpose; to raise awareness and funds for the women who have made the rugs. These women are mothers from Cambodia who are desperately trying to keep their children off the streets.

RMIT students will also be selling hand made cushions made from fair-trade cotton on the day, with the funds to also go towards Cambodian mothers.

Fair@Square attracts around 76, 000 people every year; this year, be one of them!

When: 10:30am, Friday 26th of October, 2012
