Product details

Product name: Eco Silk bag

Reviewer: Cynthia Faith

Manufacturer: Eco Silk Bags

Price: $6.50

G Rating:

One of the most useful green fashion items, not to mention affordable and unisex, is the re-usable shopping bag.

Tired of seeing the pollution plastic bags were causing, designer Emily Hay created Ecosilk Bags.

They are durable, washable and come in a range of fade-resistant seasonal colours.

Ideal for grocery shopping (specifically made to fit supermarket checkout frames), travelling, a day at the beach, or a picnic, they're also compact and light enough to carry around in your handbag bag for those unexpected purchases.

Saying no to disposable plastic bags just got a whole lot more fashionable!

Silk is a nice material and rarely used for bags. This precious material must explain the price: $6.50 each. I think it is a bit expensive for a bag even the fact itwas designed to support a good cause. But in my opinion if we want to push people acting in a green way, everything must be easy for them, so price of green products must be attractive so that the consumer do not have any objection to buy them: good cause + good price.

Amy from Green Times

Amy, I'm sad to report that the "eco silk" bags are made of 100% nylon, not silk.

From their website:
"Made from endlessly recyclable 100% nylon parachute silk – hence the name"

In this case, "parachute silk" is a weave, not a textile: the textile is nylon, a synthetic not a natural material. This means that it is stronger than silk, but is not environmentally friendly as it will not break down as it is a plastic. The bags themselves bear a tag that declare the fabric content to be nylon.

It's unfortunately misleading, and many people have promoted this product in the mistaken belief that it is made of silk.

Thanks Nicole, a valuable comment!

Although these shoppers are made from non-renewable fossil fuels as mentioned, the carrying capacity and expected lifespan far outweighs the comparative use of disposable plastic bags.

In addition, the lightweight nature of these bags (meaning they can be stored away in handbags etc) mean that users always have them at hand for those unplanned groceries or shopping - something that can be difficult with less compact reusable bags.

A few bag companies have recently introduced organic cotton or hemp versions that roll up and pack away which are an even greener option!
