Double duty

There's been a revolution in toilets.

First came the dual-flush cistern, now there's a dual-purpose cistern.

The Royal Flush dual-function cistern and hand basin works by incorporating a basin on top of the cistern.

The water to fill the toilet cistern runs through the basin first, so you can wash your hands after you flush.

On average, a family of four flushes 176 litres of water down the toilet per day and the Water Saver dual cistern can reduce that by nearly two thirds. That's a saving of more than 29,000 litres of water.

The apparent design flaw with this otherwise clever invention is that you can't turn the tap on without flushing the toilet. So you'll still need to keep the bathroom sink. Either that or you'll learn to time your morning ablutions carefully.

Caroma also have a toilet with a basin above the cistern, called the Caroma Profile suite, which has been available in Australia since the end of 2007. It has an attractive appearance and works well. Funnily enough, similar systems have been in use in Japan for years! My husband's grandparents had one in their home in Tokyo, almost thirty years ago. One would think Australia, a desert country, would have caught-on sooner!
