Claire Janisch who heads up South Africa's Biomimicry hub will show participants organisms that can provide us with innovative and progressive solutions to the design, engineering and other challenges that we now face: energy, food production, climate control, benign chemistry, transportation, packaging, and more. The vision is to create new ways of living through products, processes, organisations and policies that are well-adapted to life on Earth over the long haul.

Stop by the State of Design Festival this July for a flash forward in innovative, sustainable design. The largest design event in Australia, State of Design is open to the public with workshops, exhibitions and forums, and free trade entry. Looking to get hands on? Become an up-cycling expert with a series of workshops in everything from fabric weaving to making your very own teepee. For the fort builder in all of us there’s the Eco Cubby Workshop where you can build a scale model of your very own mini eco home. And if you're looking to the bigger picture, see how one rural town turned sustainable with a walk through of Violet Town sustainability initiatives. For something more sedate, check out the 9 to 5 Talks Program, a series of conversations with Design Thinkers, held from the 25th through to the 29th.
